Q. I AM HAVING PROBLEMS INSTALLING EMPEROR: BATTLE FOR DUNE OR WHEN I TRY TO RUN EMPEROR: BATTLE FOR DUNE I GET A MESSAGE SIMILAR TO 'CANNOT DETECT CD' OR 'MY PC WILL NOT DETECT THE GAME DISK'.

  • If you have more than one CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drive(s) you must ensure that Emperor: Battle for Dune is in the first logical CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drive before commencing play or installing the game, e.g. If you have a CD-ROM on drive letter E: and a DVD-ROM drive on letter F, install the game from drive E.

  • Also, you may want to try inserting a music CD in the other CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drive(s) when trying to run Emperor: Battle for Dune.

  • If you are using Windows 95 or 98 you may be using 16-bit DOS drivers for your CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drive. The Emperor: Battle for Dune installation requires a 32-bit driver for the CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drive. We advise you use the SYSEDIT (Windows 95 and 98 only) program and remove any references to your CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drive from both the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files. For more detailed help on any CD-ROM issues try our helpful CD-ROM Problems guide found at http://common.ea-europe.com/gens/cdrom.htm.

Q. WHEN I TRY TO INSTALL EMPEROR: BATTLE FOR DUNE, I GET A 'COULD NOT WRITE TO THE FILE %S' ERROR MESSAGE, OR THE GAME FAILS TO COPY ANY FILES. ADDITIONALLY, THE INSTALL PROGRAM MAY SUGGEST THAT I DO NOT HAVE SUFFICIENT HARD-DRIVE SPACE TO INSTALL THE GAME.

  • First of all try installing Emperor: Battle for Dune into its default directory (C:\Westwood\Emperor). Make sure you have at least 750MB free on your chosen install drive (600MB for the game, 50MB for save games and 100MB for the swap file.)

  • If you have more than one CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drive then try installing Emperor: Battle for Dune from the first logical drive.

  • If this does not help, try deleting the files in your Windows\Temp folder.
Important! - Do not delete the Temp folder itself, nor any other files or folders in your Windows folder. Delete only the files within the Temp folder. If you cannot delete some files, they are probably in use. Simply restart your PC and try deleting them again.

  • If you are using Windows 95 or 98 you may be using 16-bit DOS drivers for your CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drive. The Emperor: Battle for Dune installation requires a 32-bit driver for the CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drive. We advise you use the SYSEDIT (Windows 95 or 98 only) program and remove any references to your CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drive from both the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files. For more detailed help on any CD-ROM issues try our helpful CD-ROM Problems guide found at http://common.ea-europe.com/gens/cdrom.htm.

Q. WHEN TRYING TO START A NEW GAME, CONNECT TO A NETWORK GAME, OR JUST NAVIGATING THROUGH MENUS I RECEIVE AN INTERNAL ERROR MESSAGE, WHY?

  • Internal Errors can be caused by a few things. If you are simply trying to start a new game, connect to a network game, or just navigating through menus... it usually is being caused by a shared memory conflict. To resolve this conflict, all programs running in the background should be closed out prior to launching the game. To do this, hit CTRL-ALT-DEL and "End Task" on each task until all that is left running is:"Systray" and "Explorer". You may need to End Task on a program several times if it is not ending the first time.

  • The second reason you may be having an internal error is due to a corrupt save game or game file. Please try to load another game, or restart the mission you're receiving the error on. In some cases we can even e-mail you a save game to get you back on track. If you feel the error is happening for no reason at all, please uninstall/reinstall the game. This will ensure you do not have a corrupt game file causing the problem.

  • Finally, if the problem continues to occur, please run the"Emperor Battle for Dune_EZ.exe" program from the game CD. Fill in the information requested and click on the"Send" button. Be sure to include the exact problem you're having, and any past communications you may have had with us. This program will submit a detailed list of your computer hardware, and help us better analyse what might be going wrong.

Q. EMPEROR: BATTLE FOR DUNE IS RUNNING SLOWLY ON MY PC. IS THERE ANY WAY I CAN INCREASE THE PERFORMANCE OF EMPEROR: BATTLE FOR DUNE?

  • Try reducing the Emperor: Battle for Dune Graphics Detail Level settings. These settings can be changed within Emperor: Battle for Dune. This can be done by selecting Options from the Main Menu and then selecting Graphics. Slide the Graphics Quality slider bar between Low, Medium, High, Highest or Custom until you find a quality setting which suits you. Also try selecting Advanced Settings from the Graphics menu. From here you can change certain settings and see if these improve performance. Experiment until you are satisfied with the game's performance..

  • If Emperor: Battle for Dune is still running slowly check that the Colour Depth in both the Emperor: Battle for Dune Setup and Windows Settings are set to 16-bit colour and that the resolution in the Emperor: Battle for Dune Setup is set to a resolution suitable for your videocard, e.g. the nVidia TNT and TNT2 videocards will need to run the game using 640x480 resolution for the TNT and 800x600 resolution for the TNT2.

  • As a general rule, when running Emperor: Battle for Dune all Windows background programs should be closed down (especially any anti-virus programs). To close down these programs hold down the CTRL and ALT buttons together and press DELETE once, the CLOSE PROGRAM window appears. Highlight a program in the CLOSE PROGRAM window and click onto END TASK at the bottom of the window to close the currently highlighted program. Repeat this process for the other programs making sure that EXPLORER and SYSTRAY are the only programs left running.

  • Also you can try adjusting the Hardware Acceleration for your videocard. To do this Right-click the MY COMPUTER icon on the Windows Desktop and choose Properties from the pop-up menu. Select the Performance tab, click the Graphics button and make sure the Hardware Acceleration slider is set to full.

Q. I AM RECEIVING CHOPPY VIDEO PERFORMANCE

  • If you are having poor performance when watching the in-game movies, there are a few problems that may be occurring. Usually poor performance indicates slower video card or processing power in a computer. If your system is low on the requirements to run the game, you may want to try ending any programs running in the background prior to starting the game. Also running at a lower screen resolution (change to 640x480) can help too. Please refer to the Readme.txt installed with the game, or the manual, for more tips on increasing performance.

  • You can also try adjusting your detail settings in the Options Menu. Low Detail will remove effects like water wakes behind ships, smoke and effect lines. Emperor will also dynamically remove animations in certain situations on low spec machines to ensure a high quality game performance.

  • If you are still experiencing problems, you can add "+w" (without the quotes) to the Target line in the game's shortcut. This will force the game to preload each movie into memory before playing. To do this, right-click on the game's shortcut and go to Properties. Make sure the Shortcut tab is selected. next find the text box named 'Target'. There should already be some text in this box. After the last piece of text, put a space and then the above command line switch "-+W" (without the quotes).

  • However, if your machine far exceeds the requirements to play the game, and you're *still* having performance issues... the problem is simply driver incompatibility. We've noticed a lot of these issues coming from Windows 2000 and Windows ME. Please make sure that your Video and Sound drivers are completely up to date, and are DirectX certified. Many video boards have several different drivers available to install, depending on if they are from the card manufacturer or the chipset manufacturer. Updating the driver with ME or 2000 compatible drivers will eliminate poor performance issues.

Q. I CANNOT FIND MY EMPEROR: BATTLE FOR DUNE SERIAL NUMBER SO I AM UNABLE TO INSTALL THE GAME. WHERE IS THE EMPEROR: BATTLE FOR DUNE SERIAL NUMBER?

The serial number for Emperor: Battle for Dune is printed on the back of the Emperor: Battle for Dune manual. If no serial number has been printed on the back of your Emperor: Battle for Dune manual then contact you're nearest Electronic Arts Customer Service department who will be able to help you, the phone number can be found in the Customer Service section of the Emperor: Battle for Dune Install Guide.

Note to Windows 2000 Users: Emperor: Battle for Dune requires you to have administrative rights when installing and playing the game.

Note to RealPlayer Users: RealPlayer seems to have a conflict with the movie player used in Emperor. With RealPlayer's "Start Center" feature enabled (which seems to keep RealPlayer resident in some form) we have found stability issues when exiting Emperor as it goes to the desktop.

Q. I AM EXPERIENCING GRAPHIC CORRUPTION WHILE PLAYING EMPEROR: BATTLE FOR DUNE. HOW CAN I SOLVE THIS?

This can be caused if your videocard drivers are out-of-date.

  • If you are experiencing graphic corruption while using an nVidia TNT/GeForce videocard install the latest Detonator driver for the card from the nVidia website at http://www.nvidia.com.

  • If you are experiencing graphic corruption with the ATI (Rage 128, Radeon) or 3Dfx (Voodoo 2/3/5) video cards download the latest drivers for your video card from http://www.ati.com or http://www.3dfx.com respectively.

  • If you are experiencing Graphic Corruption with any other videocard then download the latest drivers from your videocard manufacturers website.

If this fails to solve the problem try running Emperor: Battle for Dune using 16-bit colour depth. The colour depth can be adjusted from within the Emperor: Battle for Dune setup program and in Windows Settings. Adjust the Windows colour depth in Display Properties by right clicking on the Windows Desktop and select "Properties", then go into the "Settings" tab.

Also you can try adjusting the Hardware Acceleration for your videocard. To do this Right-click the MY COMPUTER icon on the Windows Desktop and choose Properties from the pop-up menu. If you are running two video cards, the game may choose the video card you do not wish to use. You can force it to use your alternate card by adding "-ALTVID" (without the quotes) to the Target line in the game's shortcut. To do this, right-click on the game's shortcut and go to Properties. Make sure the Shortcut tab is selected. next find the text box named 'Target'. There should already be some text in this box. After the last piece of text, put a space and then the above command line switch "-ALTVID" (without the quotes).

Q. I HAVE A MICROSOFT INTELLIMOUSE AND MY MOUSE WHEEL DOES NOT WORK IN EMPEROR: BATTLE FOR DUNE.

Go to http://www.microsoft.com and download the latest Microsoft IntelliPoint Mouse driver from the Microsoft Download Center. If you do not own a Microsoft IntelliMouse and you're having problems with the mouse wheel's functionality in Emperor: Battle for Dune then download the latest mouse driver from your mouse manufacturers website, i.e. http://www.logitech.com.

Q. I HAVE WINDOWS ME AND MY MOUSE IS FAILING TO BE DETECTED. WHY?

  • First, if you're using Windows ME you will need to make sure you have the latest Windows ME compatible mouse drivers. If you have a Microsoft mouse, you can download the latest version of the IntelliPoint Mouse Software from Microsoft at: http://www.microsoft.com/. If you're using a Logitech mouse, you can check on the latest availability of drivers at: http://www.logitech.com. Until a fully Windows ME compatible mouse driver is loaded on your system, your mouse will not be recognized by the game.

  • Second, this problem could be caused with Windows ME if you're using a USB (Universal Serial Bus) mouse. This problem can also be resolved by updating to the latest mouse drivers (either Logitech or Microsoft). If updated drivers are not present, or they do not fix the problem, please use the USB to PS/2 adapter that came with your mouse to plug it into the standard PS/2 mouse port. This will allow the game to work properly with Windows ME.

  • Finally, you may just have a general mouse/DirectX conflict. You can resolve this in the same way described above. Download the latest mouse drivers from the mouse manufacturer's website. After the new drivers are installed, make sure you install the latest version of DirectX, available from:http://www.microsoft.com/directx

Note to AOL users: If you use AOL or any other system that doesn't use Windows dial-up networking, you will need to manually connect to the Internet before running the game if you want to use any of the Emperor: Battle for Dune online features.

Q. HOW DO I NETWORK EMPEROR: BATTLE FOR DUNE?

  • Emperor: Battle for Dune uses the IPX/SPX protocol to network over a Local Area Network. Make sure this protocol is loaded on each machine in your network. To check if the protocol is loaded in Win95/98/ME, click on "Start" - "Settings" - "Control Panel". From the Control Panel, open the "Network" icon. Check to see if IPX/SPX for you network card is listed anywhere in the Network Components. If not, click on "Add" - "Protocol" - then "Microsoft"-"IPX/SPX".

  • Once the protocol is loaded, launch the game on each machine, and select "Network" from the main menu. You will be taken to a general game lobby where you can chat with the other machines on the LAN, and create/join games.

Note: Windows NT/2000 may not be able to network with Win95/98/ME machines. This is due to an incompatible IPX/SPX protocol between the different Operating Systems. If you have an NT/2000 machine, you may want to try adding the NWLink IPX/SPX Compatible Transport to network with 95/98/ME machines.

Q. I CANNOT CONNECT TO WESTWOOD ONLINE. WHY?

More than likely this is happening because you have a Firewall or Proxy Server behind your Internet Connection. Please check with your Internet Service Provider to see if this is the case.

If it is, you will need to enable some ports to UDP traffic in order to communicate with Westwood Online. Ports 1234, 1235, 1236, and 1237 should allow UDP traffic.

If you do not know how to configure your firewall, please consult your firewall documentation, contact your system administrator, or contact your Internet service provider.

Q. MY MACHINE IS CONNECTED TO A LOCAL AREA NETWORK (LAN) BUT AFTER I CLICK ONTO 'MULTIPLAYER' AND THEN LAN, MY LAN DOES NOT APPEAR. HOW CAN I SOLVE THIS?

Emperor: Battle for Dune uses the TCP/IP Network Protocol. If LAN does not appear in the list after selecting MULTIPLAYER from the Emperor: Battle for Dune Main Menu then you may need to install the TCP/IP Network Protocol. To do this you will need the Windows 95/98/ME CD. Follow the steps below to install the TCP/IP Network Protocol:

  • Click onto START and highlight SETTINGS and go into CONTROL PANEL.

  • Click on NETWORK and check that TCP/IP is not listed in the NETWORK COMPONENTS window. If TCP/IP is not listed then click on the ADD button.

  • Highlight PROTOCOL from the Network Component Window Type and then click the ADD button.

  • Next select MICROSOFT from the Manufacturers window and select TCP/IP from the 'Network Protocols' window and click OK. You may be prompted to insert the Windows 95/98/ME CD, once the TCP/IP Network Protocol is installed restart your machine and then run the game.

If you are still having problems with Emperor: Battle for Dune detecting your LAN or are having problems connecting using your LAN take a look at our helpful Network troubleshooting guide at http://common.ea-europe.com/gens/network.htm.

Q. HOW DO I PLAY A LOCAL AREA NETWORK (LAN) GAME IN EMPEROR: BATTLE FOR DUNE?

  • From the Main Menu select Multiplayer.

  • Now select LAN. To host a game select Host. This takes you to the Game Setup screen where you choose your map, difficulty setting and other game options. Then wait for the other player(s) to accept the game settings. To start the game press the Play button which should appear if all players players have accepted the game options.

  • To join a game, from the Local Network Lobby select a game from the Channels List and then press Join. This takes you to the Game Setup screen where you choose client-side game options. Once game settings have been selected, click on Accept and then wait for the Host to start the game.

Q. I GET DISCONNECTED AFTER LOADING INTERNET GAMES. WHY?

Westwood Online is a matching service only. When you select other users to play with, and hit "Start Game"... Westwood Online matches your IP address with the other players and then passes the information to Emperor: Battle for Dune. From then on, all communications is happening directly between the host and the other player(s).

If one of the players has a poor connection, (low ping rate, etc), the user may get disconnected during the load process. If this happens, the user left in the game when it starts is instantly declared victorious. The only solution to this is for the user to only play with similar connections, or make sure both users have all background programs shut down prior to launching Emperor: Battle for Dune.

It is also possible for one of the users to have internal errors during the load process if they have conflicting programs running in the background of Windows. To resolve this conflict, all programs running in the background should be closed out prior to launching the game. To do this, hit CTRL-ALT-DEL and "End Task" on each task until all that is left running is: "Systray" and "Explorer". You may need to End Task on a program several times if it is not ending the first time.

Note: If you wish to play on the Internet using Westwood Online, you must have Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 or later installed onto your PC. If you prefer to use a web browser other than IE5 for your regular web browsing, you should be able to install IE5 in addition to your other web browser and make your other browser the default. Emperor will still find IE5 and use it in this case.
